How to descale a Keurig coffee maker

The Keurig is a revolutionary coffee machine that makes use of K-cups which are pods inserted in the machine. Then you then press a button and instant hot coffee is delivered to your cup. There are various flavors of the K-cups and other companies incorporated the technology in other beverages. The Keurig is a low maintenance machine but at some point you need to clean it up. This is because over a period grime starts to clog up the interior and it starts to malfunction so this is where cleaning is needed to keep it functional. Now in this post we look at how to descale a Keurig coffee maker. It will be interesting to also look at how you clean a cast iron skillet in another article.

Items for cleaning

  • A microfiber cloth

  • Descaling solution

  • White vinegar

  • Soapy water

  • Paper clip

1. Cleaning the disassembled parts

  • Unplug the machine from the wall

  • Let it cool down

  • Disassemble the K-cup holder and funnel (refer to manual)

  • Wash both parts in a sink with soapy water

  • Use a paperclip to loosen any grime clogging the needle

  • Allow to dry (you can use a lint free cloth)

2. Descale the Keurig coffee maker

  • Go back to the unplugged machine

  • Empty water reservoir

  • Fill the reservoir with descaling solution and water (refer to bottle for proportions)

  • You can also use white vinegar diluted 1:1 with clean water. The acidic vinegar removes the scales but doesn't damage the machine.

  • Place a mug under the spout and press the brew button. Collect the solution that comes out until all is finished

  • Empty the solution in the mug and replace the reservoir with about 200mls of clean water

  • Repeat the brewing process giving 30 minute intervals to give time for the cleaning agents to work

  • Now remove the reservoir and rinse it with water

  • Fill it to the line and repeat brewing process again until all the water is finished.

  • That's all!

3. Other external parts

  • Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe any gently dirt on the exterior

  • Use soapy solution as a cleaning agent

  • Also use a small brush to clean crevices

  • Caution! Do not submerge the machine in water

If there any challenges refer to the manual. Don't try to force parts apart you will break the machine. You need to descale it every three to four months so that it works flawlessly and you don't miss your morning coffee. That is how you descale a Keurig coffee maker.
